When The Vampire Diaries burst onto the scene on CW TV last fall, there can be little question as to what prompted this adaptation of L.J. Smith’s book series: it was a response to the Twilight craze. Indeed, anyone reading the Twilight books who has previously read The Vampire Diaries series, or vice-versa, will easily draw parallels. With its first season now wrapped, let’s look at how The Vampire Diaries stands up as a show.
The Vampire Diaries is the story of high school girl Elena who becomes caught in a love triangle between two vampire brothers. While she finds a soul mate in the dark and mysterious nice guy Stefan, she cannot deny her attraction to his brother, the dark and mysterious not-so-nice guy Damon. As she struggles with her feelings, the town of Mystic Falls, Virginia is threatened by other vampires and other mysterious forces.

Now how does a studio turn a book series, and a rather short one at that, into a regular primetime TV drama? Obviously that’s not as simple a task as turning a book into a film. As such, the show is more about paying homage to the books rather than following them to the letter. The premise is the same, the setting is the same, and most of the characters are the same, but the plot follows a totally different arc.
