Computer-related technology has continued to advance over the last decade, as have methods for collecting and displaying environmental-related data. These two areas of technological advances, paired with expanded and increasingly accessible internet applications, have created a landscape for increased public accessibility of environmental-related mapping tools.
The three online interactive maps highlighted below are examples of such mapping/GIS tools. The first map is provided by CNN and focuses on environmental toxins in the United States, and the last two are provided by the New York Times and focus on Clean Water Act violations in the United States and the 2010 Gulf oil spill.
