Many metric conversion tables list a conversion factor between pounds and kilograms. They state that 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds. These conversions are technically incorrect because pounds measure weight (a force) and kilograms measure mass.
Mass and Weight
Many people think that they are the same thing, but mass and weight are two distinctly different physical quantities. They are not interchangeable concepts.
An object's weight is the amount of gravitational force acting on the object. Because the force of gravity depends on the object's location in the universe, the object's weight will vary depending on where it is. For example, an astronaut who weighs 180 pounds on Earth will weigh 30 pounds on the Moon.
