In my mind, freedom has always been the idea that one can do whatever one wants. That statement is very hazy, though, and does not take into account many other factors that affect a person’s individual freedom.

In theory, we love the idea that we are free. In our modern day society, however, we are only free within the realm of the laws of our country. But can that be considered freedom? I haven’t ever seen an instance where absolute freedom worked symbiotically with a functioning society.

A common thought about freedom nowadays is that “you have the freedom to do whatever you choose as long as you are willing to accept the consequences of your actions.” All I have to say is: but that’s not actually freedom. I cannot consider anyone who does not have the liberty to act on their own will without having to deal with the aftermath as a truly free individual. There is a difference between being absolutely free and being free in a society.
