Getting a college degree online in the comfort of your own home is an exciting prospect. You won't have to worry about traffic, room and board, long lines at the registration desk, and many other real world college hassles. But enrolling is the first online degree program you run across is not a smart idea. Take some time to review information from several online colleges before considering them for your online degree program.
Is the Online College Accredited?
Just about anyone can put a business together and declare it a college. If you want to make sure that your online degree will be one that is recognized as valid by future employers and other colleges, you need to make sure that it is accredited.
Accredited means that the college and the online courses it provides have met a certain set of standards defined by an organization of higher education. There are many different accreditation organizations, so find out which organizations (if any) the online college you are looking at is accredited by. If the organization does not appear in the directory at the Council for Higher Education website, then you probably want to pass on that particular online college.
Online Degree Completion Time
Many online schools offer accelerated degree programs that allow you to complete the course work at your own pace. You will have to complete a certain minimum amount of work each term in order to maintain financial aid eligibility, however. The accelerated programs allow you to quickly complete the lower level courses instead of having to follow a rigid, structured lesson plan like in a regular brick and mortar college.
An online degree that is legitimate will require many hours per week of study time. If an online school promises you that you can get a bachelor's degree in weeks or months, then the degree is probably one that will not be recognized as valid. You want to make sure that you come out of the degree program with more than just a piece of paper, you want to find an online college that will actually provide you the education you need to succeed in your chosen career path.
Online College Financial Aid
If you intend to enroll in an online college, make sure that it offers financial aid assistance. Large, nationally recognized online colleges will have a financial aid department that can answer all of your questions and help you navigate the many forms that have to be complete to apply for financial aid. If the online degree program you are looking at does not have much in the way of help for students seeking financial aid, then it is probably not a legitimate school.
