After a fruitful week for the online gambling industry in the House Financial Services Committee, with a markup scheduled on July 27, 2010 for Barney Frank's (D-MA) Anti-UIGEA bill the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act (HR 2267), it is being reported by the Capitol Hill publication Politico on July 23, 2010 that the Republican party may move to abandon the ranking member of the powerful Financial Services Committee, Spencer Bachus (R-AL). Congressman Bachus has long been one of the strongest opponents to regulating online poker and the possibility of his presence being removed may be an added push to regulating the industry.

Congressman Bachus' Anti-Online Gambling Gaffs

Congressman Bachus has been in Congress since 1993 and has retained a strong position on the Financial Services Committee in well over ten years. This does not mean, however, that the Republican Party wishes for Bachus to stay where he is. In a 2008 House Financial Services Committee hearing on online gambling Congressman Bachus quoted statistics from an unnamed study supposedly done by McGill University stating that a third of college students who gambled online "ultimately attempted suicide".
